Poultry

South Andros High School has a chicken coop on site that can house up to 800 birds. The students and faculty are hoping to host broilers and layers to provide the local community with locally grown meat and eggs.

The Coop

South Andros High School students worked in association with University of Vermont students to turn an abandoned building into a fully functioning chicken coop. The structure can hold up to 800 chickens, which the students are excited to raise and sell to the local community.

Variety of Chicken

The coop is intended to hold egg laying hens (White Leghorn) and meat hens (Cornish Crown). The students will care for the hens and create a final product to market to the local community. The two types of hens will be held separately to prevent crossing and disease.

Incubator

South Andros High School acquired an incubator in 2013 to kick start the poultry project. Students learn how to “candle” the eggs to test if the embryo is developing 10-15 days after incubation, and monitor the temperature and humidity to ensure proper growth.
