Field Crops
South Andros grows a variety of crops including cabbages, corn, and watermelon using drip irrigation. Agricultural growth on the island is slow because of poor soil conditions.
Irrigation
The Bahamas is primarily made up of limestone, with a thin layer of soil in some areas. Drip irrigation is used to supply the crops with a continual trickle of water supplied directly to the roots of the plant. This supplies the plants with constant hydration and helps maximize water retention to conserve fresh water on the island.
Crops
Watermelon, corn, sweet peppers, and two types of cabbage are planted at different times to stagger harvest and provide continuous food production. Students learn to plant, maintain, and harvest these crops before sending them to local shops to replace imported vegetables on shelves.
Soil Science
Students at South Andros High School learn about the science behind organic food production. Students help measure ground water pH levels, and study the minerals required for plant growth.
